Hassan Daoud, a novelist and journalist who was born and works in Beirut, gives his perspective on culture, politics and writing in the Middle East. Daoud is the cultural editor of Al-Mustaqbal newspaper in Beirut, and an authority on contemporary writing from the Arab world.

After working in Beirut as a journalist during the civil war, he subsequently wrote for the daily paper Alsafir Daily before becoming a correspondent for the international Arab newspaper Al-Hayat. His commentary on political and cultural events in the Arab world appears in European newspapers as well, for example in the Neue Zurcher Zeitung.

Daoud has published two short story collections and is the author of several novels. English editions of his novels include: The House of Mathilde (1999); The Year of the Revolutionary New Bread-Making Machine (2007); and, most recently, Borrowed Time (2009). In 2010 Daoud was long-listed for the International Prize for Arab Fiction for his novel 180 Sunsets.
